BFA DW Conflicts of Interest

beccaelizabeth5, Tegan and Nyssa, in two three part adventures.
Friendly Fire did a story about space racism that ends with Tegan feeling bad that humans can be the bad guys. Which feels weird, because, she has met us. The Doctor's alien friend sounded interesting. The locals sounded like incompetent bullies, so, plausible enough. I liked the ending. It was all plausibly sad and small whilst still being a genuine threat to the team.
The Edge of the War didnt grab me, though I was trying to do small tasks at the same time.
I got very frustrated trying to put the new fan together and now it is all clicked into place, probably correctly, it seems to me too tall, which is frustrating because my entire lack of sense of scale has struck again.
Which wasnt what I sat down to write about but is how I felt through most of the story.
It didnt quite grab me or connect me emotionally to the characters, and its very possibly not the writings fault.
The story reminded me of that 8th Doctor adventure where that guy time loops a party because his lady died there. The comparison does this story no favours. I can see in the general case why someone would be desperate to stop the place and people he loved from tipping over into the day the war hits them. But this story didnt make me feel it. As I said, I was distracted, maybe the atmospheric bit with the ghosts of the future would have grabbed me if I wasnt trying to get plastic to behave. But I felt like no one had a chance to be genuine, or possibly that when they did it didnt make sense yet. Difficult to connect with that. And I didnt know if Tegan was herself through some of the story, or get any sense for if she actually liked the guy that probably liked her, so the idea at the end where she knew all along the war was coming and was a responsible time traveller about it... it did hit, but it was a bit diffuse, because that guy didnt grab me.
The earlier story also suffered because people were lying and you were meant to notice but then most of what got conveyed was just Bad Liar so then what do you feel?
So in this one you know weird is happening but you dont know if its mind control or Tegan and Nyssa lying and either way they're not sounding genuine and it's just... distancing.
So now I'm grumpy and turning the story pieces around in my head looking for the click where it connects, much as I was doing with the fan while listening, and that was probably part of why it didnt click for me.
Only review I can properly give is I liked the ingredients but I should probably relisten from the top when I can concentrate.
