On the nose... punching?
Jan. 21st, 2007 02:15 pmHaving read many many fanfics I have concluded that if either the Doctor Who or Torchwood big reunions involve punch+kiss, or even kiss+punch, I will be somewhat disappointed.
... no this doesn't mean I don't think they want punching, and kissing. And I'd love to see them kissing, of course. But if it's what happens when they first set eyes on each other?
It's like on the nose dialogue.
... gah, where did I read about that??? Aha! Jane Espenson
Saying exactly what you mean.
In real life, it is yaay. Clear communication, emotionally satisfying, lack of that passive aggressive I won't tell you what's wrong you should know and I'll sulk until you do thing.
In fiction?
Dude, we *know* that bit. We can guess with a fair degree of accuracy that's what they want. Is it really the payoff to see exactly what we knew anyway?
... sometimes, yes. The kissing with the rising music and the rising... music.
But traditionally that's the end of the story.
It takes build up, and frustration, and yes I know the characters have had rather enough of both, but in a story? I haven't. If they just walk into the same room and punch+kiss? I'm getting nothing I hadn't already seen in my head a billion times.
On the nose dialogue... on the nose punching.
on the nose kissing? something a bit off there...
To make it into a story, they have to want to punch+kiss, yet express it through plot and frustration and talking sideways and only eventually as the payoff having got the punching out of their system get to the kissing.
Otherwise it's not a payoff it's a minor... drabble of an incident.
YMMV, IMHO, etc, obviously. Just, I can make them kiss in my head. And do. Often. The reading about it is not necessary.

Date: 2007-01-21 02:35 pm (UTC)but they have a whole episode to fill, and sadly they're not going to fill it with snogging.
at least DW isn't. TW, you never know.

Date: 2007-01-21 02:54 pm (UTC)If it's plot then snogging then the snogging is earned, achieved, won after much action.
It puts it in the position of importance.
Like... what was it, the DW ep with no Doctor, Love and Monsters? ...which I don't like so I don't know why I'm using it for an example. But. It starts with him chasing the Doctor around, but ends with him and his somewhat disturbing girlfriend, because the point was that RL > Doctor so he starts with Doctor and moves away.
If there's going to be snogging, especially involving Jack, then I think the plot should be moving towards. Start with adventure, then get the kissing parts.
Although the traditional happily ever after do take modifying, especially if you want to keep Jack on both shows.
