I watched 'Jumper'.
It was really really boring.
I can't believe they spent a bunch of FX money and did all those 'look we're somewhere foreign' bits and didn't bother with interesting characters to wrap around it.
... no, wait, I can totally believe that. I mean, I watched it, so it did what it set out to do, really.
*sigh*

Two female characters with lines and names. Didn't talk to each other. One was a damsel in distress, one was a mom. Guys Do Things, Women Get Done To.

So. Damn. Boring.

Also, when the dude walked in hunting jumpers and was all 'NSA' that was a much more interesting story. The one that ended up happening Read more... )

This film is *fun*. I laugh at the kind of comedy where people fall down and go splat and bounce back up again, so martial arts comedy works. Plus the crossdressing mistaken identity trying to be cool parts are also funny. So the first part of the film there's lots of running around having contests and being funny. And then politics turns up and it gets very dark serious very quickly. I like that plenty, it has more contrast to work with, and you already like the people that are in danger.

I think the best bit of the movie is Fong Sai Yuk's mum. Funny and kick arse and saving the day.

I did not so much remember the bit where her husband beats her with a stick. That was not good. At all. It wasn't that it was bad to watch, we not really see it, it's that it's sort of part of the comedy and then she's covered in bruises and then she forgives him cause he's so cool and reads poetry. Big problem built in there.

A couple bits I remember were not in the version of the film I bought. Wiki reckons they'd be in just about any other version, just not the one that was in the supermarket this month. I seem to have a knack for that.

Now I want to buy the sequel.

Last time I complained I was fed up of films where everyone is white mum said I should watch more Asian films. If I can find more like this reckon she's right.

It do make me feel my ignorance though. I can't even vaguely tell when things are supposed to be if they're not set in England. I can't read the clothes, even the colors without looking things up. Makes me notice my pool of knowledge is really pretty tiny. At least with movies set in British pasts I can tell if they're history or myth or dancing betweens, kind of, sometimes. No such chance anywhere else.

On the way to and from college this week I listened to three Doctor Who audios.

I finished 137 The Whispering Forest. 5, Turlough, Tegan and Nyssa. I like that they've got the team back together. Read more... )

I got around to listening to Nevermore. 8 and his new companion... I'd have to look up her name again, which isn't a good sign. Read more... )

Last I listened to Whispers of Terror, 6 and Peri. I actually liked this one. Read more... )

More college means more opportunity to listen to audio on the bus, but also means I'm likely to run out of Doctor Who before I run out of lessons. I've listened to almost all of them now. If I catch up and have to wait for the new ones every month I'll be mostly on reruns on the bus. But I've still got 14 left before that happens.

Most of my entertainment budget has been going to Big Finish for rather a long time now. Happy little subscriber me. Weird to think I might catch up.
