After reading of David Gemmell's death yesterday, I decided to go back and re-read Legend. I'm a bit short of sleep because of it.
This was his first book, and there are still some rough edges. I've been reading writing how-to books lately, and there are a large number of things he does that break their rules. Plus the story ended a few times more than was quite necessary.
But the story itself is great. Druss the Legend, and a last stand. Characters sketched in quickly and then developed. People finding they can become more than they ever dreamed of being. All the good stuff of heroic fantasy.
His other books got even better.
And now there won't be any more.
The other reason I read these is there's always a good reason to cry, or three, with all that stupid death. But death always means something. People leave their mark in the world, leave it better than they found it.
Stories can do that. Show that, and be that.
I'm going to go write some more today.
