The http://www.torchwood.org.uk/html/ site continues to be interesting. Memos between the characters, stuff about the locations, pictures of the tech toys. Fun.

I stayed up and watched it again
but have insufficient brain to come up with any more thoughts

watched the Declassified

I'm never sure if that's a good idea, yet I can't resist either.

I love seeing shots pulled apart, the hows and whys of them. I sometimes like hearing from the writers, though I tend to prefer my readings. There were moments in today's one that made me less than pleased, but they saved it by the end of the sentence, so.

Problem is, they then went on to show us yet more of next week. I feel like I've seen so much of it I probably saw all the shiny bits already. Why do they do that? Already hooked! No more needed!

Also there's the canon status of it... I mean obviously it isn't canon in the same sense the episodes are, and yet its stuff that has been on TV made by the same people. Is weird.

Anyways, off to sleep. Sleep is of the good.

Okay, I've been thinking about things structurally again. In Lit the other week we did an exercise where we asked what would change if we took one thing out, or changed one thing, or took away a character.
Characters have/are story functions. When novels are adapted for film often they take away characters, which leaves their functions to be redistributed to other characters. Which frequently annoys. Or those functions get left out entirely, which changes the story rather, which again annoys.

How this applies to Torchwood.

As ever, no idea if I'm finding anything meaningful, just taking some ideas for a walk. I find it fun. There might be more fun later. Odds are I'll re-watch the ep again at some point. All this is from memory. Apparently this is what my brain does in its sleep.

I woke up... bugger, about an hour before I got up, but I'm having one of my deeply disinclined days. The sort where I'm all why bother, why move, why not just quit the course and read a lot of books and not have to leave the house ever again.
(Just to be clear, my agoraphobia has nothing to do with Dark Secrets. Just World Is Big. ;-) )
ANYways, what finally got me up is wanting to write down stuff about Torchwood.
And this lit stuff being all useful is just handy for the motivation.

Barthes codes
5 ways we decode texts
I always have to look these up and my handouts are on the other computer, but I found a nice page here. Also, I can spell hermeneutic without looking it up. Now I just have to memorise the other four codes.
... That page I found links to one that uses Star Trek to teach narratology. Nifty!
Anyways... I got the other computer out to check. Needs recharging anyway.

1. proairetic - actions, things happening and then more things happening
2. hermeneutic - mysteries, things we aren't told yet, questions raised
3. cultural - stuff that is understood within a particular cultural framework. Like, clothes as signs of social class.
4. semic - connotations, stuck around a name makes a character
5. symbolic - deep themey stuff, big oppositions

There's themes like these Read more... )

Torchwood specifics... Hmmm. Okay, things that turn up in every episode of Torchwood so far and might be Themes: Read more... )

...There's probably others. But right now I actually want to go read another chapter of something lit related, so I'll attempt that while the mood is there.

What is the question that Torchwood poses and presents possible answers to?

For Highlander it would be 'when is it okay to kill'
for Raven it would be 'when is it okay to steal'

for Torchwood... 'when is it okay to shag'?

... okay, massively oversimplified and somewhat tongue in cheek way of saying it there, but, seriously, thoughts? Or is it too early in the series to say?

So the series in both a this-world and an in-world way raises questions about sex. I mean, just from having Captain Jack existing, the reaction in newspapers has been... Well, existing, which is interesting of itself.

So I'm wondering, is this The Question?

Alternative question is about use and abuse of tech, which is built right into the plot structure every week so far, and what is and isn't human, which is built right into the genre. But those are generic in the sense that they're what SF does. Every story has different answers, but is the big genre questions. So I poked it a bit for a distinctive question.

NB, see this observation on last week Torchwood spoiler, about how some topics/codes/questions get read as louder than others, and how this is several kinds of silly.

This? Not ever the only way to see things.

ANYways, latest thought-spark.

At this rate I manage about 3 pages of book before I have to come write about Torchwood again. Is a good thing I've read that bit once already.

Class tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to get my head in gear to think about actual assigned texts.

Ibsen, Doll's House. Relations between genders, between married couples, between friends.
Torchwood is very, very different than that Doll's House.

After all the Cultural Studies and Lit reading, I have certain opinions about where meaning comes from. Like today's reading, 'Death of the author', all in the reading, that kind of thing. I mean, it seems to me entirely obvious that of course readers construct meaning from the text and all the other stuff in their head and of course those readings will be quite different depending on where they are and of course the preferred reading or what the named author consciously intended isn't terribly relevant and certainly isn't authoritatively The Meaning, because nothing is.

Thing is, this is obvious and of course when I'm talking about academic essay stuff.

When it comes to fandom, I wander around reading stuff, especially people complaining about XYZ and saying my favourite shows are a bit rubbish, and I find my first reaction is "But you're reading it wrong!"

And... that can't be right. With my other hat on, there is no wrong, just different.

But... but... Wrong! Obvious! And they're complaining about exactly what isn't there! And what is there would be the opposite which would be happy making and then they'd love my show as much as I do!

... Yes I said my show. I get tattoos of favourite shows. To say they get under my skin is rather literal.
Mine! Loves it!

But fan love wants everyone else to love it too. All with the sharing. So I want to go around telling people they only don't like it because they haven't seen ABC, which, er, means telling them they're Reading It All Wrong.

I'm all conflicted on a weird sort of meta level.

*puzzled face. sad and puzzled. with maybe a bag of sweets held out for sharing but strangely all rejected. Sad puzzlement. sniff.*

Also, I'm kind of fed up with Beginning Theory. On account of it just begins. I realise this is what it says on the tin, but I like much better the further reading books. Only I didn't read them today, so I'm kind of... like being hungry in the brain.

And I'm making more posts than I get replies, which always makes me sulky for reasons that are silly when I look at them yet which do not go away.

*sulk*
*double sulk*
*triple ran out of chocolate sulk*

Time: multiple possible futures / alternate universes. Possibilities branching off a vaguely central now then branching again and again.
Trousers of time, sort of thing.
Or, branches. Like on a tree.
Or on coral?

I should be asleep. I attempted sleep for an hour but it gets really really boring. I don't anticipate getting actual sleep for another three or four hours yet. And I had to get up and get something to eat, because hungry beats sleepy anyways.

Have to get up for college tomorrow, but thankfully Tuesdays go afternoon+evening. Thursdays are mornings. I'm not looking forward to getting up on Thursday. Plus we get our assignments. I'll have to start thinking essay thoughts. Blah.

I keep telling myself I only have to turn up and passing would just be bonus, but, well, I'm not convincing.
