All done. Either I need to sleep or watch more episodes.

Sleep is adviseable but it's all I've done all day/week/month and I'm rather fed up of it.

morning

as I feared, joining more fic communities has resulted in not more fic but multiply crossposted announcements of the same amount. because the newsletter really does it's job.

which is cool, I just... want fic.

my imminent failure in Intro Lit is obviously not half as important
:eyeroll:

... I've got half of it written and I'm doing the re-reading for the other half. I have until Friday. It's all good.

... I need more chocolate.

Having read many many fanfics I have concluded that if either the Doctor Who or Torchwood big reunions involve punch+kiss, or even kiss+punch, I will be somewhat disappointed.
... no this doesn't mean I don't think they want punching, and kissing. And I'd love to see them kissing, of course. But if it's what happens when they first set eyes on each other?

It's like on the nose dialogue.
... gah, where did I read about that??? Aha! Jane Espenson
Saying exactly what you mean.

In real life, it is yaay. Clear communication, emotionally satisfying, lack of that passive aggressive I won't tell you what's wrong you should know and I'll sulk until you do thing.

In fiction?
Dude, we *know* that bit. We can guess with a fair degree of accuracy that's what they want. Is it really the payoff to see exactly what we knew anyway?
... sometimes, yes. The kissing with the rising music and the rising... music.
But traditionally that's the end of the story.
It takes build up, and frustration, and yes I know the characters have had rather enough of both, but in a story? I haven't. If they just walk into the same room and punch+kiss? I'm getting nothing I hadn't already seen in my head a billion times.

On the nose dialogue... on the nose punching.
on the nose kissing? something a bit off there...

To make it into a story, they have to want to punch+kiss, yet express it through plot and frustration and talking sideways and only eventually as the payoff having got the punching out of their system get to the kissing.

Otherwise it's not a payoff it's a minor... drabble of an incident.

YMMV, IMHO, etc, obviously. Just, I can make them kiss in my head. And do. Often. The reading about it is not necessary.

Lots of interesting. I especially like how this one looks in light of the last episode and the relationship lines that go through the season. Read more... )

Am rewatching 1-04 Cyberwoman

I emailed the BBC the other day asking about why the subtitle differences, and they said that the DVDs are done by BBC Worldwide, a different company to the TV subtitles (I think, it's in a folder somewhere).

But I still don't know if either or both of them have scripts to work with.

The DVDs have some fairly significant differences in there. I mean, the really clear stuff, tends to be the same. "Have some fucking mercy" there's no doubt about.

But there's rather a lot of difference between "Hold him still" and "Have a nice day"
which are the TV and DVD versions of what Jack says when the lift starts up.

I'd have never heard 'have a nice day' there until I read it subtitled that way.

It's like the Supernatural subtitles can almost fool me into thinking he really did say "Sam" and not "Jared".

I'm pretty sure the TV subtitles are more accurate, but I'm basing this on the concept of actually making sense, which, you know, not necessarily so.

But it goes back to the 'what is canon' question again. You'd at least think we're all working with the same words, but noooooo.

A Jack that can be all "Have a nice day" quippy at that particular moment is a Jack who really *earns* the words Ianto throws at him, and the rest.

Jack who's more "Hold him still" is being protective of his team.

Waaaaaay different characterisation.

In other detail oriented news I noted that Tosh wastes 35 seconds in between doors, yet the second door still opens about 45 seconds after the first one. That's a classy bit of alien gadgetry right there.

I've definitely had a lot of thoughts about this before, yet I still love the episode. And watched it in that way my brother watches his videos that drives me nuts, rewinding practically every scene and watching it over and over. But there's so much to see. Watch Jack and watch Ianto and you have two complete stories.

The more I watch the less I find not to like in this ep. Which has a lot to do with Ianto.

There's a lot about Jack going on in the not exactly subtle subtext. Loyalties and people being gone and that. He manages to be a massive hypocrite at the same time as suggesting he really has switched sides. Which as shadowing on what might happen later makes it make more sense it was all about 'her' because she is gone so... There might be a so.

Okays, I have not so much to say about this that doesn't need to go in fic. So I go watch 1-05.

This one felt kind of off. I mean, every episode is so different from every other episode they could all feel off. But the character voices... there were some lines I'd have given to different characters, and others I'd rewrite now. Odd bits of knowledge and odd ways of expressing them.
Is the problem with developing characters as you go along, something has to end up the outlier.

Also I felt it kind of lost at show-not-tell. I mean it did a lot of showing, but then Jack told us all what it all meant, at some length. That was... inelegant.
