... I've been posting about Torchwood practically once an hour all day. I should maybe slow down a little. Think about something else for ten minutes.

Or, you know, sleep.

But I'm never very good at that.

I am still awake.
This is very unhelpful.

I have decided I want to go to Cardiff.
I would sit in front of the Torchwood fountain and meditate.

I've been poking around the BBC South East Wales website and they have a Doctor Who locations list, which is very useful. There's a Torchwood site too, but if they have a specific locations list I didn't finds it. I mean they have a locations linky but it goes to 'iconic locations' ie touristy thingies.

So, anyways. Go Cardiff, find fountain, sit. Plan.

... So I haven't actually been further than the shop in six months. Not the point.

Fools Journey
2

Higher

Part: 5/7

Rating: I'm aiming for a tone much like Buffy or Angel, which are 15 to 18 rated in the UK.
Pairing(s): Giles and Ethan are in the same story, therefore it is vaguely G/E
Spoilers: Post Chosen, post Not Fade Away. Refers to earlier series canon.
Third in my Fool's Journey series, the rest in memories here or my fic tag. This one should basically make sense as a stand alone.

Summary: Rupert Giles and Ethan Rayne. Best mates, worst enemies, sometimes both at once. They've got a lot of history. So even when the Initative took Ethan away, Giles was sure he'd see him again, sooner or later... Now the late Ethan Rayne is turning out to be twice the trouble, and Giles must be the one to deal with it.

Things I have learned through You Tube today - newbie musicians and school bands have done some terrible things to Ode to Joy.

The bit from Die Hard remains cool

but I wanted to make really loud classical music, and alas, no good version can I find.

I've been doing so much talking about Torchwood I'm tempted to change my default icon, for the first time since starting on LJ.

Except I think my T icon is still kind of lame, so...

Times the random playlist makes the world that bit more surreal: Am looking at screencaps of Captain Jack and the music starts singing "You're just like my favourite underwear"

And proving that you can link any two texts, suddenly the lyrics seem *so relevant*

("Lost you once you were hard to find / Got you back you didn't live like mine" - see! Doctor/Jack!)

... I need to go do reading. In sanity world.

You think this is weird? Someone's icon of "Mr Bunny wants a huggle" with a machine gun combined in my head with "Mr Flibble's very angry" to make a Highlander / Red Dwarf crossover.

Because, you see, an Immortal would unfortunately survive even through the evolution of the cats.

I read a thing someone linked to that said in passing "music is universal", and reckoned that everyone hearing the same bit of music would read it the same way (nobility of human spirit or something, in that case).

I've been listening to more classical music lately, because the guy that drives me to college listens to it, and what I have learned is I've completely forgotten how to read the stuff. Or, okay, maybe not completely. I can start by figuring out what bit of a movie it would go with, though I often get sort of contradictory ideas. But that right there is why I question that 'universal' bit. Music, like any other text, is part of the web of associations, connotations, built up through and between all the texts of our lives. You can't just pull out one bit of music and say 'this means this'.

If music was universal I could listen to chinese music and hear whatever the makers thought it meant, instead of just hearing it and going 'huh, plinky music on a funny scale, weird'.

I guess that maybe some things - like slow or fast, or loud or quiet, or something - would translate as less/more excited or whatever, but I think the specifics are very local.

Not that I've studied music. I heard a talk about the music in Angel once and it made a lot of sense. If a TV show has different themes for different characters I listen for that now, a bit. But still mostly I'll ignore the music unless it has words.

Which, also because I often have the sound off and the subtitles on, but that's just me.

Music I listen to on my own is usually from TV or films or conventions. Connotations, connections, why *I* want to hear that music, not just what that music means in some weirdly unconnected way.

The supermarket sells sonic screwdrivers :-)
So... I, er, own two now.
Well there's one with 9 and one with 10. Got to have both. Obviously.

... I haven't even got the first one out the box. I technically don't even know if it works. I'm not sure if it has batteries even.

But... pretty!

... Suddenly I'm wondering what kind of toys they'll sell for Torchwood...

This week's GW rather annoyed me. I understand that there are things you can do with a ghost plot that you otherwise can't do, and it can look like that is where the plot lives. But this week they had a severely injured man who had his heart stop come back as a ghost and trash the ER so he could keep on being a ghost because he didn't like being all injured and useless. And then because he was a ghost he led them up the mountain to find his brother, who the search and rescue team were unaccountably not finding despite him being clearly visible from above (where the helicopter was).

So, on several levels, annoyance.

Made the rescue people incompetent in order to give the ghost a job. That's just sloppy plotting.

But the guy just killed himself so he could be a ghost. And the central character seems to be fine with that. And then she's going around telling the doctor there's more to life than what he sees, and sometimes its out of his hands.

So... they're seriously running a TV show that tells doctors to just give up and let people be ghosts???

Not good. Not good at all.

I had hopes it was building up to some sort of dark payback, result of hubris or something. This episode had no kind of shadowy fallout anywhere. It had a shiny ending. They all climbed the mountain again to scatter ashes, like they were the first time when he fell down.

One wonders, if he got better that quickly, why he couldn't get his own damn self off the mountain. But one does actually know that hospitals make people better and is quite necessary often. It just didn't play very well to have his recovery be background.

Also, small point, but the girlfriend did happy gratitude at the central character, only the girlfriend had never met her, only her friend. How did she know to do gratitude? She didn't, they just wanted the mushy ending.

I think the possibility some people would want out, would want to be ghosts, is actually one of the central *problems* once people start believing in ghosts. As in, the plot should deal with it as if it were a problem. Not just use it as the awww of the week.

I thought they were doing that, early on, in the ep with him from Firefly. When the lady killed herself to be with him, it was all about talking her out of doing that. What was the difference this time? Trading one brother for the other? Or because the one was already in a coma?

It just didn't raise the issue at all. Little miss Ghost Whisperer was all about enabling the ghost and helping it and I just didn't see her trying to keep him not-a-ghost, which she really should have.

Also, I'm getting a bit fed up at all the times they have ghosts that they don't tell us are ghosts until they've been wandering around for a while. It conveys part of her world, yes, but we're told she always knows when she is looking, so not telling us is cheating. Cheat the audience is unfun.

Torchwood is on again in a minute.

If this looks like too much detailed reading in, you should see my Buffy+Angel reviews. Really.

Okay, so there's still bits I didn't do the detail on, due to an early desire to watch from the sofa. But I think this will do for now.
